A Caught Reading Novella

Her father was branded a traitor. Her title was stripped away. And now someone wants her dead.

Lady Henrietta Ashbury once enjoyed every privilege of England's aristocracy. But when her father is arrested, convicted of treason, and hanged, everything she has ever known is torn from her.

Cast out by society and stripped of her standing, Henrietta becomes little more than a scandal everyone wishes to forget. Worse, her cruel stepmother forces her into service as a companion and maid to the Dowager Duchess of Yorkshire, a humiliation Henrietta never imagined she would endure.

What she does not expect is the duchess's son.

David Blackmoore, the handsome Duke of Yorkshire, is everything she should avoid—powerful, respected, and dangerously kind. While Henrietta struggles to rebuild her shattered life, the duke seems determined to protect her, even when society refuses to forgive the sins she never committed.

But the deeper Henrietta is drawn into Blackmoore Hall, the more she realizes her father's death was no simple miscarriage of justice.

Hidden enemies are still at work.

A conspiracy reaches into England's highest circles. Dangerous traitors will do anything to protect their secrets. And when Henrietta discovers the truth her father died trying to expose, she becomes their next target.

As threats close in and old enemies emerge from the shadows, Henrietta must decide whether to continue running from the past—or trust the one man willing to risk everything for her.

Because falling in love with a duke is dangerous.

Uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the Crown may be deadly.

And some hearts are worth risking everything to save.

A sweeping Regency romance filled with danger, intrigue, family secrets, loyal friendships, and a swoon-worthy duke who refuses to give up on the woman he loves.

Content Note: This novel contains themes of wrongful execution, emotional and physical abuse, violence, attempted abduction, family betrayal, and grief that may be difficult for some readers. While the story includes danger, suspense, and emotional hardship, it is a closed-door historical romance with a hopeful and uplifting ending.

The Story Behind the Story

This story began as one of my Caught Reading social media images. What started as a single image and a "what if?" quickly grew into a full novella.

Chapter One: Sent Away in Shame

Henrietta stared at her stepmother in stunned silence, certain she must have misunderstood her.

“I have made my decision and already arranged everything for you, Henrietta. You will travel to Yorkshire at the end of the week and enter service as a chamber maid to the Dowager Duchess of Blackmoore. Her Grace is expecting you.”

The words struck with such force that Henrietta nearly lost her breath. A chamber maid. Only two years earlier, she had been presented to society beneath the glittering chandeliers of Almack’s Assembly Rooms, dressed in ivory silk and pearls while her proud mother watched with tears in her eyes. At sixteen, Henrietta had been among the youngest debutantes of the season, though her mother had insisted upon the early introduction for one heartbreaking reason. She had been dying.

Even now, Henrietta could still remember the fragile smile upon her mother’s pale face and the way her gloved fingers had trembled as she adjusted the ribbon at Henrietta’s waist.

“You must have your future secured, my darling,” she had whispered softly that evening. But no future had come. Only grief. Her beloved mother had passed away scarcely four months after her debut, leaving behind an emptiness within Ashbury Manor that had never truly healed.

Henrietta missed her still, with an ache so deep it seemed carved into her very soul. Her mother had been warmth and gentleness itself—kind to servants, generous to tenants, and endlessly loving toward her only daughter. Everything Henrietta’s stepmother was not.

Lord Brook Ashbury, Earl of Stafford, had remarried far too quickly after his wife’s death. At first, Henrietta had convinced herself it was loneliness that had driven him toward another marriage. Her father had always been a good man—honorable, patient, and deeply devoted to his family. Yet over the past year, their world had crumbled piece by piece. Whispers had become accusations. Accusations had become scandal.

Her father had been charged with fraud, conspiracy against the Crown, and fathering two illegitimate children by different women. The claims had spread through society like wildfire, eagerly devoured by those who delighted in ruin and gossip.

Henrietta had never believed a word of it. Not once. Neither had her father’s solicitor, nor several respected gentlemen in the House of Lords who had fought tirelessly to prove the accusations false. But the evidence presented against him had been overwhelming, and the voices condemning him louder than those defending him.

In the end, truth no longer mattered. Her father had been stripped of his titles, lands, and fortune. Everything had passed to the nearest male relative, while Lord Stafford himself had been dragged to Newgate Prison like a common criminal.

Only a week earlier, he had been hanged. The memory alone threatened to shatter what little composure Henrietta still possessed. She swallowed hard against the burning ache rising in her throat. Since the scandal, society had cast them aside without hesitation. Invitations ceased. Friends vanished. Relations refused to acknowledge them in public. Even the governess who had once claimed to love Henrietta like a daughter had written only once, to advise repentance for her father’s sins. As though he had committed any.

Her stepmother, however, seemed to suffer the social humiliation far more deeply than the grief itself. Now engaged to the Earl of Worthing, a desperate marriage of convenience between a title-starved widow and a debt-ridden earl, she appeared determined to erase every trace of the Ashbury disgrace from her life. Including Henrietta.

“Stepmother,” Henrietta pleaded softly, her voice trembling despite every effort to steady it. “You are the only family I have left. Please… do not send me away.”

Lady Ashbury’s expression did not soften in the slightest. “You carry your father’s name,” she said coldly. “Every time I look upon you, I am reminded of the scandal that destroyed my life.”

Destroyed your life. Not his execution. Not the loss of an innocent man. Not Henrietta’s grief.

Only her own inconveniences.

The older woman adjusted the lace cuff at her wrist before continuing in a tone utterly devoid of sympathy.

“You must earn your keep now. Her Grace has been unexpectedly charitable in offering you employment despite your complete lack of experience. Frankly, I doubt you shall last long. You have never worked a day in your life and likely know nothing useful whatsoever, but at least attempt to appear competent.”

Henrietta lowered her gaze to hide the tears threatening her composure.

Her stepmother paused near the doorway. “And if you lose this position,” she added coolly, “you will find another for yourself, or else the poorhouse may take you in. I shall not.” The words that followed struck deepest of all. “In truth, Henrietta… I never wish to see you again.”

Silence filled the room. Henrietta closed her eyes briefly, forcing herself not to break apart before the woman who already regarded her as little more than a burden. Her stepmother had never been affectionate, merely tolerant during her marriage to Lord Ashbury. But since the scandal, that tolerance had curdled fully into bitterness and cruelty. Every glance carried blame. Every word carried disdain. And Henrietta was simply too exhausted to fight any longer.

Knowing further pleading would accomplish nothing, she turned quietly and walked toward her bedchamber. There would be no maid to assist her. Not anymore. The servants who had once curtsied to her now avoided her gaze entirely, uncertain whether she was beneath them or merely unfortunate enough to remind them how swiftly fortune could change.

***

Henrietta entered her room and closed the door softly behind her. For a long moment, she simply stood there in silence, staring at the half-packed trunks near the hearth while the late afternoon light spilled weakly across the carpet.

A chamber maid. The daughter of an earl reduced to service. The humiliation should have wounded her pride more deeply than it did. Instead, all she truly felt was tired. Tired of grieving. Tired of defending her father to deaf ears. Tired of being looked upon as though disgrace itself clung to her skin. One thing, at least, would not change. She had already become invisible to the world around her long before today.
